Volleyball Drops Four Set Thriller To Coast Guard

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – A phenomenal team effort by the Emerson Women's Volleyball Team fell just short Tuesday night as they dropped a four-set heartbreaker to the Coast Guard Bears. The Lions fell 21-25, 27-25, 25-11 and 28-26 to move to 15-14 on the year and 4-4 in conference play while CGA improves to 18-8 overall and 6-2 in the NEWMAC.

Set one saw the Lions come out on point as they swung .261 as a team with Amanda Linzmeyer going on a nine kill tear for a .533 average. The defense stepped up to throw down three blocks with a solo and an assist for Elizabeth Reid while the split setter offense of Elaine Nichols and Giuli Frendak combined for 13 assists en route to a 25-21 opening win.

The second set was to be a battle that would showcase six tie scores and a lead change as Katerina Salgado took the reigns for the Lions with five kills to lead EC. Four team blocks saw Emerson's defense go off the chain, but unforced errors helped keep CGA in the hunt as they scrapped to a .200 team average that just barely edged the Lions 27-25.

The third set saw the Lions fall out of sync a bit as Coast Guard ramped up for a .476 average while taking advantage of EC's 15 unforced errors. The Bears put up three service aces as well as five huge team blocks to rip to a 25-11 win.

The fourth set proved to be an unreal match-up as both teams forced 16 tie scores and nine lead changes to keep the fans at the edge of their seats. Both squads put up two team blocks in the set, but the Lions topped CGA with four service aces to their two. The difference was made again in unforced errors as both teams put up 15 kills, but the Bears kept the errors at bay to close out a 28-26 thriller.

The Lions will have a week off before taking on MIT in NEWMAC action next Tuesday. They'll host the Engineers at 7 p.m. at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym in Boston, Mass.
