Springfield Muscles Past Volleyball

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Alyssa Thorne lit up for 15 kills on the day, but the effort wasn't enough as the Emerson Women's Volleyball Team fell 26-24, 25-19 and 25-21 to the Springfield Pride. The Lions are now 10-5 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC play while Springfield improves to 12-1 on the year and 4-1 in conference action.

Set one was a barnburner as SC hit .302 as a team to EC's .268 while both teams had to battle off 10 tie scores and two lead changes in the set. Alyssa Thorne, Kat Rice and Jessica Hamilton all dropped four kills in the set to lead the Lions, but in the end it was Tessa Smolinski's seven kills and the two blocks by the Pride that just barely gave them the 26-24 upper hand.

Set two saw Springfield click into high gear as they swung .242 while spreading the offense more. For the Lions Jules Augustine led the floor with six kills for a .455 percentage, but Emerson couldn't work past the Pride's blocking as SC put down three blocks on top of their three aces for a 25-19 win.

Three was all the Pride needed, but not without some scrapping by the Lions, who hit .312 in the set with Alyssa Thorne stepping up for six kills and a nasty .750 attack percentage. The Pride collected two more blocks though on top of their 18 kills as they closed it out 25-21.

Next up the Lions will travel to Smith to continue NEWMAC action, facing the Pioneers at 7 p.m. in Northhampton, Mass.
