Women's Lacrosse Opens Season With Gritty 13-12 Win Over Immaculata

HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Fueled with Chelsea Phillips' five goals, the Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team opened their 2013 spring campaign with a 13-12 win over Immaculata Sunday afternoon. With the win the Lions open up 1-0 on the year while IU drops to 0-1.

The first period saw the Lions do work as they scored two goals within the first five minutes alone with rookie Tayllar Righini scoring the first EC goal of the season, as she did for Women's Soccer in the fall. Phebe McKelvey stepped up next for the Lions with an assist from Mackenzie Johnson to make it a quick 2-0.

Immaculata fired back with a goal of their own, but Emerson kept edging away with two more goals in rapid succession. In the 18th minute of action IU made it 4-2 before Emerson went on a spree, scoring four unanswered goals with from Chelsea Phillips and Tracie Lombardo each. Looking comfortably up 8-2 with under five minutes remaining the Mighty Macs fired back with four straight goals at the end of the half to head into the break with Emerson leading 9-7.

The second period saw the Might Macs come out firing again as Allison Jackavick scored two quick goals to tie it before IU took the lead for the first time with two more goals. Down 11-9, Chelsea Phillips and Tracie Lombardo stepped up again with a goal each to knot it at 11 each.

Coming down to the wire, Emerson's goalie, Victoria Kanaris came in clutch, with seven saves in the half and 14 in the game as both teams netted another goal to make it 12-12. With under four minutes to go in the game, Emerson's Libby Murphy played the hero as she blasted in an unassisted goal to pull the game to its final 13-12 resting place in Emerson's favor.

The Lions will remain down in Hilton Head for their next game which is slated for Tuesday at 1 p.m. against Misericordia.
