Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A 47 kill effort fell short Tuesday night as the Emerson Men's Volleyball Team lost 25-18, 23-25, 25-19 and 30-28 to JWU. With the loss the Lions fall to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play while JWU moves to 2-0 on the year and 1-0 in the GNAC.
Set one saw the Wildcats come out of the gates swinging as they took they lead and never looked back. JWU swung a lethal .346 as a team with Shawn Kennedy and Mett Jenkins flooring four each. The Lions fired back with Jackson Wiley putting down four kills of his own, but in the end EC couldn't hold off the JWU firepower falling 25-18.
Set two Emerson stepped it up to push back on the Wildcats, hitting .300 with Alex Frapech throwing down six kills for a .556 average. With EC's offense on point, it was errors that caught up with the Lions as they had 13 unforced errors to led JWU back in the set. After nine tie scores and three lead changes Emerson finally closed the deal, winning 25-23.
With it knotted 1-1 the Lion offense derailed again, swinging only .083 in the set. The highlight came from Jackson Wiley, hitting .500 with four kills for EC. JWU locked in for the third set, hitting .440 and exploding for four blocks en route to a 25-19 win.
The Lions didn't fall easily though as they stepped up to force extra points in the fourth set as the Wildcats struggled with unforced errors. Alex Frapech and Nadav Swarttz combined in the set for nine kills as EC forced 15 tie scores and 10 lead changes. In the though though it was Shawn Kennedy and Dan Struebing combining for 11 kills that finished Emerson off with a 30-28 final.
The Lions will hit the road again next week as they set to travel to Newbury. Match time is set for 7 p.m. in Brookline, Mass.
