Box Score 2 BOSTON, Mass. – Jackson Wiley floored 28 kills on the day en route to a split of the Emerson Men's Volleyball Team's first tri-match of the year as they topped NYU-Poly 3-1 before falling 3-0 to Southern Vermont. On the day the Lions now hold at 2-2 after their first week of action in the 2013 season.
In the first match of the day the Lions matched up against the NYU-Polytechnic Blue Jays where EC came out a bit sluggish in set one as they were outhit .435 to .240 by NYU to fall 25-22 to open. Set two was another story though as Jackson Wiley heated up for four kills in the set to lead the Lions while Emerson fired off a .476 attack percentage to even it out with a 25-14 win.
After that it was all Emerson the rest of the match as in set three EC swung a nasty .455. Wiley threw down again, this time with five kills in the set with Alex Frapech right behind him with a .600 average for four kills as Emerson took the win 25-12. They'd repeat the score again in set four to close out the match with Emerson going off the chain for a .579 average. Wiley was flawless on the set going five-for-five in the set to close out the 3-1 win.
Match two on the day pitted the Lions against the Southern Vermont Mountaineers who came out ready to play coming off a sweep of NYU Poly. The first game set the tone for the match as the teams battled through nine tie scores and four lead changes with Alex Frapech dominating with seven kills to lead both teams. In the end SVC's blocking and EC's attack errors and serve errors caught up with them falling in a close 27-25 set.
Set two saw the Mountaineers find their rhythm as they stepped up to swing .233 in the set with three different members of SVC flooring three kills. The Lion offense just couldn't keep pace though as they fell out of sync in the set falling 25-15. The third set saw EC rally back to push the Mountaineers a bit more as Jackson Wiley fired up for three kills to lead the Lions. In the end Keven Walley's five kills were unstoppable though as SVC rolled to a 25-19 win.
The Lions will travel to the SUNY-IT Tournament next Saturday and Sunday where they'll face-off against SUNY-IT and Mount Ida. First match starts at 6 p.m. Friday.
