Box Score WENHAM, Mass. – Lack of timely hitting proved to be costly Saturday afternoon as the Emerson Softball Team fell 6-1 to Saint Joseph's of Maine in the GNAC Semifinal round at Gordon College. Kelsey Tuthill took the loss to fall to 16-3 on the year as the Lions are now 31-8 on the season.
In the match-up the Monks struck first as Emily Leverone stepped up for her first at-bat of the day and crushed a three-run shot to right center to make it a quick 1-0 game. The Lions were scrappy as usual though tying the score in the third inning as Bianca Buono knocked an RBI single to right field to plate Nikki Delaney to make it 1-1.
After that the Lions couldn't seem to make use of their five other base runners in the game who were left stranded while the Monks surged in the fourth inning, tearing open the game with four run inning off five hits and a costly error which allowed two runs in.
While the Lions battled at bat, they were unable to get to Rae-Marie Copan who allowed just one run off five hits in the outing as Theresa Hendrix put the cherry on top for the Monks in the sixth inning with a lead-off shot to center field off an 0-1 pitch to pull it to 6-1 out of the Lions reach.
Emerson will look to battle back tomorrow as they face off against JWU at 11 a.m. in Wenham at Gordon College with the winner taking on Saint Joseph's of Maine directly after.
