Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A valiant effort by Stephen Selnick with 19 assists and Connor Burton and Eric Doherty with six kills apiece wasn't enough to keep the Emerson Men's Volleyball post-season going Tuesday night as they fell in the GNAC Quarterfinals to the third-seeded JWU Wildcats 25-14, 25-15 and 25-22. The Lions close out the GNAC season with an overall record of 10-15 on the year.
Set one the Lions just couldn't seem to overcome the JWU defense as the Wildcat block was insurmountable as they put up seven blocks on the Lions in the set. Hitting .240 as a team, JWU found themselves led by Don Dias with four kills for a perfect 1.000 average to take a quick 25-14 win.
The second set seemed to be the same story for the Lions as the first with the offense just unable to take off and find a rhythm while JWU gathered steam in the set, swinging .258 as a team with Don Dias again shining for the 'Cats with six kills. Nadav Swarttz threw down three for the Lions in set, but again the JWU defense out-blocked EC with three to take a 25-15 win.
The Lions battled back in the third though as they posted four tie scores and four lead changes in the set to push the 'Cats to the limit, this time with Connor Burton surging for four kills. JWU's middles again plagued the Lions though this time with four blocks while Dan Struebing's six kills gave the Wildcats just the edge they needed as they finished the match with a 25-22 final.
The loss closes the regular 2012 season for the Lions who will await the outcome for their bid to compete in the ECACs.
