Box Score BOSTON, Mass. – The accumulation of second-chance points and points off turnovers turned out to be the Achilles heel of the Lions Thursday night as the Babson Beavers took off with a 77-54 win, dropping the Emerson Men's Basketball Team to 0-5 on the season while Babson remains a perfect 7-0.
In the first half, Babson hit 13 of 28 shots from the floor, good for 46.4% and 45% from 3 while going 5-5 from the stripe. Emerson kept pace on the floor with a matching 45.8% and 5-9 from downtown. EC was unable to draw the shooting foul though as Babson went flawless from the line to give the Beavers the edge.
Leading all scoring in the first half for the Beavers was Marcus McDermott with 13, going 4-5 from the field and a perfect 3-3 for three as well as 2-2 at the line. Eli Kell-Abrams led the Lions with his aggressive style of play, pouring in eight. Teammate Eric Wahl helped the cause, hitting a nasty off-the-Wahl last second shot to cut Babson's lead to a mere nine headed into the half 36-27.
Momentum shifted in the second half with Babson taking it to the Lions on the glass to score 13 second chance points to steadily edge away. Turnovers were also detrimental to the Lions offense as they turned the ball over 22 which Babson turned into 18 points.
To change the pace in the half, the Lions also came out with a more physical style of play, which changed the story in the rebounding arena, but also gave Babson 24 free throws, 19 hitting home. Also limiting the Lions were two major scoring threats, Nathan Firn and Eli Kell-Abrams, saw limited in the second half with four fouls each to go along with 11 their team-leading points apiece for the game.
The 2011-2012 Emerson Men's Basketball season will continue this Saturday as they travel to face the Suffolk Rams for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
