Men's Tennis Clinches at Wheaton, 6-1

Lions lock up first NEWMAC Tournament bid behind Nocchi and Leung

NORTON, Mass. (April 15, 2026) – Emerson College clinched a spot in next week's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament for the first time in program history thanks to a 6-1 triumph over Wheaton College in a NEWMAC men's tennis matchup at Clark Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Emerson will participate in the first round of next week's NEWMAC Tournament in the No. 4 vs. 5 seed match on Wednesday, April 22, for the right to advance to the Conference semifinals later in the week. The Lions and Clark University could be playing to round out the regular season on Saturday for the right to host the other again in that first round clash, pending the result of Clark's match against Salve Regina University on Thursday.

Highlights

  • Junior Filippo Nocchi, sophomore Connor Leung and first year Adam Alireza were all double winners to lead Emerson to the postseason clinching win.
  • Sophomore Cameron McAllister and first year Tai Finestone posted key singles wins for the Lions.
  • Junior Calvin Van Dyke earned a point for Wheaton in singles play, while the doubles tandem of Jack Thain and sophomore Pablo Munoz posted a doubles win for the Lyons.

How It Happened

  • Emerson won the doubles point by winning two of the three matches as Nocchi and Leung posted a 6-4 win at No. 1 after Wheaton's Munoz and Thain had finished their 6-1 win at No. 2. Alireza and first year Caiden Riebold clinched the Lions first point with their 7-5 triumph at No. 3.
  • Van Dyke leveled the match by posting the first singles point for Wheaton with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles against Reibold.
  • It was all Emerson from there, though not without the drama of three matches going three sets. Leung pushed the Lions back in front with a back and forth 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 triumph at No. 2 singles against Munoz.
  • McAllister drew Emerson within a point of the match win with his 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) decision at No. 6 singles over Thain.
  • Nocchi provided the match clinching point with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against junior Jaime Galligo.
  • Finestone and Alireza both rallied from a set down to add singles points for Emerson with three set wins at No. 4 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
