Springfield Battles Past Men's Tennis

Huppke and Prendiville lead Pride as double winners

WESTON, Mass. (April 11, 2026) – Springfield College battled its way to a 5-2 victory over Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's tennis match at the Regis College Tennis Courts on Saturday.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Liam Huppke and first year Austin Prendiville were double winners to lead Springfield to the key NEWMAC win.
  • Seniors Ethan Gomulka and Marc Villanueva Abad contributed for the Pride with key singles wins.
  • Junior Filippo Nocchi continued his impressive play at the top of the Emerson lineup as a double winner, while first year Adam Alireza posted a point for the Lions in singles play.

How It Happened

  • Springfield won two of the three doubles matches to earn the first point of the match, rallying after Nocchi and sophomore Connor Leung breezed to a 6-1 win at No. 1 for Emerson to win by just a break at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Huppke and junior Angelo Guzman clinched the point with their 6-4 decision at No. 3.
  • Huppke followed by dropping just a game in his straight sets victory at No. 5 singles over Emerson senior Noah Mesaros to post the first singles point for Springfield.
  • Alireza put Emerson on the board and cut the Springfield lead in half with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 3 singles over Springfield sophomore Akito Shimamura.
  • Gomulka pulled Springfield within a point of the match win with his 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 6 against sophomore Cameron McAllister.
  • Villanueva Abad provided the match clinching point for the Pride with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at No. 4 singles against first year Tai Finestone.
  • Nocchi and Prendiville both claimed three set decisions at the top of the ladder to round out the match. Prendiville took a back and forth 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win against Leung at No. 2 singles, while Nocchi posted a 6-4, 1-6, 10-6 victory against Guzman at No. 1.
