Coast Guard Earns Sweep Over Baseball

Bears rally for 6-5 win in game two after cruising in game one

WEST NEWBURY, Mass. (April 11, 2026) – The United States Coast Guard Academy swept a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) baseball doubleheader against Emerson College at Pentucket Regional High School this evening. The Bears rallied from an early three run deficit for a 6-5 win in game two after rolling to a 23-4 triumph in game one.

Emerson took the time to recognize its six seniors with a Senior Day breakfast at the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium Skybox on campus this morning before brief recognition between the games. The Lions six seniors are: Paxton Silas, Russell Silverman, Huon FitzpatrickCharlie Coors, Justin Fields and Shane Moriarty.

Game 2: Coast Guard 6, Emerson 5

Coast Guard offset a four-run first from Emerson by scoring four runs of its own in the third to complete the sweep in game two. Junior Carson Cho batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the Bears, while senior Drew Basque hit 2-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Freshman Yadisson Karbalaieasghar contributed a pair of hits, a run scored and RBI, while senior Kael Godshalk drove in two runs.

Freshman Alexander Smith earned the win (2-2) in relief for Coast Guard with junior Jackson Dorsey collecting his fourth save as the duo combined for five shutout innings of relief without allowing a hit and just two walks while striking out six. Smith allowed just two walks with a pair of strikeouts over 3.1 relief innings, before Dorsey retired all five batters he faced, striking out five, to close it out.

First year Vincent Fuller was 2-for-2 at the plate for Emerson with a pair of walks, a run scored and two RBI. Junior Braeden O'Connell hit 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored, while classmate Justin Fields batted 1-for-3 with a double, stolen base and run scored. First year Jack McCoy chipped in with two RBI for the Lions.

Junior Tyler Metcalf took the loss (1-5) on the mound for Emerson, yielding six earned runs on ten hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 5.1 innings. Huon Fitzpatrick and junior Shane Moriarty combined for 3.2 innings of shutout relief for the Lions, scattering two hits and two walks, with Fitzpatrick striking out four in his three innings of work.

Emerson erased a Coast Guard run in the top of the first with four in the bottom of the frame after the first two batters struck out. The Lions loaded the bases with a single, double and walk before Fuller and McCoy each drove in two with singles to center.

After pulling a run back in the second, Coast Guard reclaimed the lead with a four-run third as Karbalaieasghar, Basque, senior Luke Percifield and Godschalk all produced consecutive RBI singles. O'Connell led off the fifth with a home run and then Fields walked to chase the Coast Guard starter, but Emerson was unable to score off the Bears bullpen the rest of the way.

Game 1: Coast Guard 23, Emerson 4 (7-innings)

Coast Guard grabbed a five-run lead in the top of the first inning and broke the game open with 11 runs over the sixth and seventh to claim the game one win. Carson Cho paced the Bears lineup by going 4-for-5 with a home run, five RBI and four runs scored, while freshman Peter Karloutsos batted 3-for-5 with a stolen base, three runs scored and two RBI. Junior Nate Stafford (Jupiter, Florida/Suncoast) and Yadisson Karbalaieasghar each contributed a pair of hits, including a double, while junior Ayden Gurevich drove in three for the Bears.

Sophomore John DiMarsico picked up the win (4-1) in relief of junior starter Vito Giordano who scattered five hits over three scoreless innings to start. DiMarsico yielded four earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks over the final four.

Sophomore Liam Curley went 2-for-4 at the plate for Emerson before giving way to Paxton Silas who singled, was hit by a pitch and scored a run. Charlie Coors and junior Garrett Fisher each contributed two-run home runs for the Lions, with Fisher's the first of his career in just his third at bat of the season when he pinch hit with two out in the bottom of the seventh.
