Suffolk Turns Back Softball

Rams pitching scatters four hits and yields three unearned runs

BOSTON, Mass. (March 26, 2026) – Suffolk University turned back Emerson College 6-3 in a non-conference softball matchup at Lester Rotch Field this evening.

Senior Lily Newhall earned the win (5-3) in relief for Suffolk, allowing just an unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts and no walks over the final four innings. Junior Cynthia Rucinski yielded two unearned runs on one hit, but walked three and hit a batter, with three strikeouts over the first three frames for the Rams.

Senior Catherine Carignan drove in two runs for Suffolk with a pair of sacrifice flies, while freshman Claire Basaldua hit 1-for-3 with an RBI. Postgrad Jolie Quintana batted 1-for-4 for the Rams with a pair of stolen bases and two runs scored.

Sophomore Avi Kuperman batted 1-for-4 with a double and RBI for Emerson, while first year Malena Cardinale also hit 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Junior Riley Caiazza scored two runs for the Lions.

Junior Cal Sheehan took the loss in the circle (2-5) for Emerson, allowing six runs, only two earned, with 12 strikeouts and three walks in the complete game effort.

Suffolk and Emerson combined to score five runs in the first inning – none earned – as the Rams took advantage of two errors in scoring three in the top of the first before the Lions got two back in the home half aided by an error, two walks and a hit batter. Basaldua capped the Suffolk scoring in the top of the first with an RBI single down the right field line. Cardinale led off the bottom of the inning with a double to left center and later scored when Caiazza reached on a throwing error and then sophomore Riley Fasteau forced in the Lions second run when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Suffolk got those two runs right back in the top of the second after loading the bases with a walk, bunt and single without an out. Junior Ava Lanza drove in a run on a ground out and then Carignan followed with a sacrifice fly to right.

Emerson pulled back within two in the fifth as Caiazza reached on an error at first and then advanced all the way to third when the ball kicked to the wall. Kuperman followed with a double to left center. Suffolk added an insurance run in the seventh when Quintana reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an error on what should have been a strikeout to end the inning.
