Baseball Outslugs Gordon in Spring Break Finale, 15-13

Fields delivers game winning two-run homer in the eighth to lift Lions

DAVENPORT, Fla. (March 14, 2026) – Emerson College closed out its spring break trip with a second-straight win, outslugging Gordon College 15-13 in a non-conference baseball matchup at Lake Myrtle Park this morning.

Junior Justin Fields drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, and scored four to pace the Emerson lineup, finishing 2-for-4 at the plate. Sophomore John Churchward hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, while classmate Liam Curley went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and run scored. Junior Braeden O'Connell added a double for the Lions, while sophomore Aidan Callahan and first year Cameron Forbes chipped in two RBI.

Sophomore Xavier Hall picked up the win on the mound for Emerson, allowing an earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings of relief. Classmate Henry Kagan picked up his first save with a perfect ninth.

Sophomore Adam Gracie batted 4-for-6 with a stolen base, three RBI and two runs scored for Gordon. Junior Aaron Ferreira hit 3-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore Gabe Fales finished 2-for-3 with a stolen base and three RBI.

Freshman Jacob Bettencourt took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with five strikeouts and three walks in three innings of relief for Gordon. Junior Kevin Whalan started on the mound for the Fighting Scots and allowed five runs, four earned, on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks over four innings.

Emerson doubled up Gordon over the seventh and eighth innings to clinch its second-straight win. O'Connell led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and then scored when Fields reached on an error and then Forbes drew a bases loaded walk to put the Lions in front for the first time since scoring two runs in the bottom of the first.

After Fales pulled Gordon even with an RBI single in the top of the eighth, Fields delivered a two-run home run with two away in the eighth to put Emerson in front for good. Kagan did the rest, retiring the Fighting Scots in order in the ninth to seal the win.

Gordon took a 4-2 lead in the second inning as Gracie delivered a two-run single to center after junior James Coats doubled in a run and before sophomore CJ Massella added an RBI single.

Gordon extended its lead with a sac fly from Fales in the third and then a three run fifth as junior Tyler Wilson doubled in a run, Fales added a second sac fly and then Gracie delivered an RBI single for an 8-5 lead. Emerson answered with back-to-back hit batters with the bases loaded before first year Jack McCoy added a sacrifice fly to knot the score.

The teams traded three runs each again in the sixth with Ferreira posting a two-run double and then stealing home for Gordon before Curley drew a bases loaded walk, Forbes a sac fly and Callahan an RBI single to tie the score once again at 11-11.

Emerson (2-6, 0-0 NEWMAC) is scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when it hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology at New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Massachusetts, at 3:30 p.m. Gordon (3-7, 0-0 CNE) will host Fitchburg State University on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
