BOSTON – Emerson Women's Volleyball had a successful day at the Clark Athletic Center on Saturday (Sept. 6) as it concluded the UMass Boston Tournament with a pair of victories. The Lions battled the host Beacons in a five-set gauntlet before sweeping Salem State, 3-0, later in the afternoon.
EMERSON VS. UMASS BOSTON
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 3, UMass Boston 2
Records: Lions (2-2) | Beacons (1-5)
HOW IT HAPPENED:
-
The first set was a back-and-forth affair. With the teams tied at 9-9, Emerson won six of the next eight points to establish a four-point advantage at 15-11. However, UMass Boston responded with a four-point run to draw even again. Trailing 20-18, the Beacons won seven of the next nine points to take set one, 25-22.
-
Set two was almost a mirror image of the first as this time it was the hosts pulling away first for a 15-10 lead. However, the Lions would get hot late, using a 7-3 run to pull within one. UMB scored three-straight to try and stave off the comeback, but Emerson would not be denied. It closed out the set with an 8-1 run to take set two, 25-22, and tie the match at a set apiece.
-
The third set was a tight one as neither team could build a lead larger than two until the Lions jumped ahead 17-14. From that point on though, it was all Emerson as the guests finished the set with an 8-3 run to take the third act, 25-17.
-
Set four was the closest game of them all. The Lions established a lead early, but could not put any distance between them and their opponent. A five-point rally in the middle of the set kept the Beacons in the match as they took the lead 13-12. The match was tied at 21, 22, 23, and 24 before UMB was able to claim the set 26-24 and force a fifth and deciding set.
-
UMass Boston carried their momentum into the deciding set, establishing an 8-5 lead at the changeover. They extended that lead to 12-7 with a 4-2 run. However, the Lions used four-point and five-point rallies to come-from-behind and take the deciding set, 16-14.
