BOSTON – Emerson Men's Soccer made an early score stand up as the Lions outlasted Eastern Connecticut State, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 5) evening at Rotch Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Lions set the tone early registering four shots in the opening minutes of the contest.

Their efforts paid off in the 10th minute as senior Cade Mallett put the home team on top with an assist from sophomore Vigo Cassidy.

Emerson would then lock down Eastern Connecticut defensively, allowing just two shots (one on-goal) for the remainder of the half.

The Warriors put the pressure on coming out of the break, putting six shots towards goal in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza.

However, Emerson was able to make the 1-0 score stand up to earn its first win of the young season.

It was a tale of two halves in terms of offensive output as the hosts outshot the visitors, 9-2, in the opening period before Eastern Connecticut turned it around to outshoot Emerson, 11-5, in the second half.

East Conn also kept the pressure on in the second act, earning eight of its nine corner kicks in the final 45.

Junior goalkeeper Wylie Jelinek made five saves in the win, while the Warrior duo of Aidan Peterson and Jack Harmon made seven total saves in a losing effort.

Emerson concludes its three-game homestand on Tuesday, Sept. 9. The Lions will host intercity rival Wentworth in a non-conference contest at 6 p.m.
