Softball Posts Split with Wheaton on Senior Day

BOSTON, Mass.- The Emerson College softball team earned a doubleheader split with Wheaton in the final regular-season home game Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field, falling 4-0 before triumphing 7-5. With the results, the Lions secured a spot in the NEWMAC Tournament for the first time since 2019.


GAME ONE
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 0, Wheaton 4
Records: Lions (17-16, 9-10 NEWMAC) | Lyons (25-13, 10-9 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wheaton chalked up a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to seize a quick 2-0 lead.
  • The Lyons added one run in the fourth to stretch their advantage to 3-0.
  • The visitors tacked on a run in the seventh to push the margin to 4-0.
     

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) racked up three hits.
  • Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) chipped in with one base knock and a walk.
  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) pitched innings and registered seven strikeouts.


GAME TWO
THE BASICS:
Score: Emerson 7, Wheaton 5
Records: Lions (18-16, 10-10 NEWMAC) | Lyons (25-14, 10-10 NEWMAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Emerson produced two runs in the bottom of the second inning to establish a 2-0 lead. Carly Rosenberger (Conshohocken, Pa.) laced a single to left field to drive in Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) and Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.).
  • The Lions picked up a run in the third to widen the margin to 3-0. Grace Beaulieu (Rochester, N.H.) crossed the dish as Avi Kuperman (Newton, Mass.) recorded an RBI.
  • The home side added one run in the fourth inning to grab a 4-0 advantage. Mackenzie Rice (Severna Park, Md.) scampered home on an RBI fielder's choice by Sam Zannotti (Dudley, Mass.).
  • Emerson tallied two runs in the fifth frame to extend the gap to 6-0.
  • Wheaton got on the board in the top of the sixth inning, chalking up one run to cut the deficit to 6-1.
  • The Lions responded with a run in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to 7-1.
  • The Lyons manufactured four runs in the top of the seventh inning but Emerson was able to hold on to lock up a pivotal 7-5 victory.


INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Caleigh Sheehan (Bolton, Conn.) finished with three base hits and one run scored.
  • Ally Lacey (Londonderry, N.H.) registered two hits and one RBI.
  • Riley Caiazza (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) notched two base knocks and one run scored.
  • Jessica Gomez (West Chester, Pa.) hurled a complete game and fanned five batters.

SENIOR DAY CELEBRATION:
Between games, the Emerson softball program honored its six seniors of the Class of 2025: Grace Beaulieu, Jessica Gomez, Ally Lacey, Mackenzie Rice, Carly Rosenberger, and Sam Zannotti.


POSTSEASON TICKET PUNCHED:
Emerson grabbed the No. 6 seed in the NEWMAC Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Coast Guard in the play-in round May 5.
