BOSTON, Mass.- The No. 4 seeded Emerson College men's basketball team posted a 67-50 win over fifth-seeded Springfield in the NEWMAC Tournament First Round Tuesday evening at the Hank Smith Court.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Emerson seized a double-digit lead with 6:51 remaining in the first frame, 25-15, as Lucas Brenner (Miami, Fla.) splashed a trey.
- Springfield closed out the opening period with an 8-2 run to trim the home side's halftime advantage to 27-23.
- The Lions stretched the margin to 21 points with 7:51 left to play on a free throw by Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany), 57-36.
- Emerson outscored Springfield 40-27 in the second stanza to pick up the postseason victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- Lucas Brenner (Miami, Fla.) poured in a game-best 17 points.
- Jacob Armant (Arlington, Texas) netted 14 points and dished out four assists.
- Trevor Arico (Saline, Mich.) tallied 12 points on the night.
- Linus Helmhold (Krefeld, Germany) registered six points and seven rebounds.
- Guillermo Gasset Ruiz (Malaga, Spain) added six points and six boards.
- Emerson shot 45.6% from the floor and connected on 8-of-15 from behind the arc.
- Springfield concluded the contest with a field-goal percentage of 40.8% to go with 30% shooting from the perimeter.
- Jarron Flynn and Hunter Matteson paced the Pride with nine points on the night.

With the victory in the opening round, Emerson advances to play top-seeded WPI in the NEWMAC Tournament semifinals February 27.
