Men's Basketball Shoots Past WestConn, 71-67

Lions bury 12 three-pointers on way to first win of season

BOSTON, Mass. (November 14, 2025) – Emerson College buried 12 three-pointers, connecting at 52.2-percent from long distance, in posting a 71-67 victory over Western Connecticut State University in a non-conference men's basketball matchup on Hank Smith Court at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium tonight.

Senior Jacob Armant paced Emerson with a season-high 18 points, aided by 3-for-5 shooting from the free-throw line, with four assists and three rebounds. Junior Brendan Taylor contributed nine points on 3-of-7 shooting from deep to the Lions balanced effort, with three rebounds and three steals, while classmate Shay Roban finished with eight points – all during a late first half flurry – with a pair of threes. Senior Linus Helmhold hauled in a season and game-best ten boards for the Lions, while junior Guillermo Gasset Ruiz chipped in seven points, making all three shots he took including a three-pointer, with six rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

Sophomore Marcel Henry led all scorers for WestConn with a game-high 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting and four rebounds. Junior Jaysean Morgan (Poughkeepsie, New York/Poughkeepsie) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 14 points, three rebounds and two blocked shots in 25 minutes off the bench for the Wolves. Classmate Tayejon Lynch chipped in seven points, nine boards, three assists and a steal.

Leading by three (22-19) with under seven minutes to play in the first half, a put-back reverse dunk from junior LJ Glover, Jr. sparked an 8-2 Emerson run to open a nine point lead (30-21) after another second chance basket from postgrad Asher Gardiner with 2:33 to play in the half.

WestConn pulled back within three (30-27) after a three-pointer from sophomore Armaan Sandhu a minute later, but eight-straight points from Roban, including a pair of corner three-pointers, sent the Lions into halftime with an 11-point lead (38-27).

Emerson's lead was still 11 (40-29) after two free-throws by Armant two minutes into the second half, when WestConn scored nine-straight, including seven from Morgan to pull within two (40-38) two minutes later.

Emerson's lead was two (47-45) with 14-minutes to play when the Lions scored eight of nine points over the next six minutes to reclaim a nine-point cushion (55-46) on a jumper from junior Caden Zurek. WestConn clawed back within four on a jumper from Henry with five minutes to go and Emerson pushed the lead back to nine (66-57) after an Armant drive with under four minutes to play.

Gasset Ruiz buried a three that had Emerson in front by seven (69-62) with a minute remaining, but WestConn closed once more to within a pair (69-67) on as Sandhu triple with 37-seconds left, but could get no closer as Helmhold made a pair of free-throws to seal it.
