Women's Volleyball Fends Off WPI, 3-2

Hokenson posts triple-double to power Lions win

BOSTON, Mass. (October 18, 2025) – Emerson College fended off a charge from two sets down by Worcester Polytechnic Institute to secure a 3-2 (26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 22-25, 15-7) triumph in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's volleyball action at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium today.

Sophomore Chloe Hokenson spearheaded Emerson with her third career triple-double with match-high totals of 17 kills and 23 assists to go with 13 digs, three block assists and a service ace. Her first triple-double of the season joins a pair for the Lions as a first-year against Clark University (10/17/24) and Smith College (10/22/24).

First-years Lizi Horning and Shirley Yu joined Hokenson in double-figures for kills with 11 apiece, with Horning adding four digs and two aces and Yu contributing six digs and four block assists. Sophomore Sophia Schiappa posted her second double-double of the year and career with 19 assists and 12 digs with a match-high five aces. Junior Lauren Yoo posted a team-best 20 digs with two assists and two aces.

Freshman Amelia Lynch led WPI with 11 kills, nine digs and two block assists, while senior Fiona Gillisposted ten kills. Sophomore Preslie Jerebker dished out 19 assists for the Engineers with 16 digs and two aces, while freshman Lauren Boycourt added 13 assists and ten digs. Freshman Bridget Spees chipped in 23 digs, seven kills, two aces and three assists.

After Emerson took the first two sets behind eight kills from Hokenson and nine combined aces, including four by Schiappa, WPI battled back to win the next two and force the fifth set. The Lions hit .429 with three kills apiece from Hokenson and Horning to grab the win. With the deciding set knotted at 6-6, the Lions closed out the match with a decisive 9-1 run, including back-to-back aces from junior Kori Meissner for the final two points of the set.

Emerson (12-9, 4-3 NEWMAC) is back in action on Tuesday when it visits Smith College for a NEWMAC match at 7 p.m. The Lions return to Boylston Street next Saturday, October 25, to host Connecticut College at Brown & Plofker Gym in non-conference play at 1 p.m. WPI (9-10, 2-5 NEWMAC) hosts Wellesley College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
