Boston, Mass. - Emerson hosted NEWMAC rivals Wellesley on Friday afternoon for a Senior Day softball doubleheader.
Makenzie Killough,
Claire Overton, and
Steph Trendell were honored between games for their contributions to Emerson softball over the years.
The Blue overpowered their hosts to a 6-1 win in game one, but Emerson flipped the script on offense in game two en route to a come-from-behind walk-off 8-7 extra innings victory. The Lions move to 14-18 (5-13 NEWMAC), while Wellesley finishes their season at 16-22 (7-13 NEWMAC).
GAME ONE: Wellesley 6, Emerson 1
Jessica Gomez took the circle in the first game for Emerson. Wellesley sent out Sarah Wicker for her 18th start of the season.
The Blue got on the board first in the top of the fourth after Emily Kulhanek drove in a runner with a two-out single to right field. Wellesley added two more in the top of the sixth, first on an RBI single to center field with one down by Jillian Colgan and then with another RBI single for Kulhanek on the next at-bat, this time down the right field line.
Wellesley scored again in the top of the seventh, as a two-out double to left center by Wicker drove in one. Colgan hit an infield single in the next at-bat, which Wicker came around to score on. Colgan stole second base on a wild pitch, which set up Chiara Lundin to drive her in with a pinch-hit single up the middle. The Blue led 6-0 heading into the bottom half.
Overton led off the bottom frame with a double to center field. After a strikeout in the next at-bat, Gomez brought Overton around with a single to center field. Wicker would get the final two outs on a fielder's choice play at second base and line out to first base, picking up her 13th complete game of the season in the process.
Gomez gave up ten hits and struck out five during her day in the circle, also going 3-3 at the plate. Overton recorded the Lions' only other hit. Wicker stuck out 12 Emerson batters and gave up four hits while going 2-4 out of the three-hole for Wellesley. Colgan and Kulhanek both went 3-4 for the Blue.

GAME TWO: Emerson 8, Wellesley 7

The Blue held a 2-1 lead after the first inning. Kulhanek drove in two with a two-out double in the top of the first, but
Riley Caiazza responded in the bottom half with a two-out RBI double to get Emerson on the board. Both sides went down 1-2-3 in the second inning. Wellesley extended their lead by one in the top of the third when Kulhanek brought a runner home on a ground out to shortstop with runners on the corners.
The Lions scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-3 lead. Overton got it started with an RBI single through the left side to get the deficit down to one and Killough followed it up with a two-run home run to give the Lions the lead. The score would remain the same until Wellesley reclaimed the lead in the top of the sixth with their own three-run inning. A two-out bases-loaded single to right field by Julz Vargas tied the game at four, and then the Blue took a two-run lead on two walks in the next two at-bats.
Wellesley took the lead into the seventh inning and got Emerson down to their last out. A throwing error on an infield ground ball by Caiazza allowed Makenzie Rice to score from third for the first run. Gomez then tied it at six with a single through the left side before Wellesley got the final out of the inning on the next at-bat.
Wellesley took back the lead in the top of the eighth when Andrea Delgado hit a sac fly to drive in Emeline Gaunce. In the bottom half,
Grace Beaulieu stepped in as a pinch hitter with no one out and runners on the corners. She reached on an infield single while
Kit Zenga scored from third, tying the game at seven. Overton later came up with two outs and runners on second and third and delivered a single to left field for the walk-off win.
Sheehan allowed four hits and struck out four before being replaced by Gomez after getting two outs in the sixth inning. Gomez gave up two and struck out one while finishing the game to get the win. Wicker pitched the first two innings for Wellesley, allowing three hits and striking out two. Colgan relieved her in the bottom of the third and gave up ten hits while striking out five.
The seniors showed out in what might be their final games in an Emerson uniform. Overton went 3-5 with two RBIs for the Lions, Killough's two-run home run in the bottom of the third was her only hit of the game, and Trendell had a solid 2-4 showing at the plate.
