NEW LONDON, Conn. - Emerson College lost twice Saturday afternoon to Coast Guard in a NEWMAC softball doubleheader. The Lions were blown out 16-0 in the first game and lost 4-3 in game two. Emerson moves to 7-9 (0-4 NEWMAC) on the season while Coast Guard improves to 4-10 (3-1 NEWMAC).
In game one, Coast Guard jumped on Emerson starting pitcher
Caleigh Sheehan scoring two runs in each of the first two innings to take an early 4-0 lead. The Bears opened up the game in the third inning, scoring four more runs on Sheehan and forcing her out of the game with one out.
Kate Regan relieved her and gave up two more runs before getting out of the inning with Coast Guard leading 10-0. Sheehan was responsible for all ten of the Bears' runs, but only five were credited as earned.
Coast Guard's offense continued in the fourth inning, tacking on two more runs to extend their lead to 12-0 with one out.
Kit Zenga relieved Regan after the second run scored, but the Bears scored four more runs before the inning's end. Emerson's bats were held at bay for the entire game despite getting runners in scoring position multiple times. The Lions had runners on second and third in the top of the fifth but were unable to make anything of it, leading to the game being called early due to mercy rule with Coast Guard leading 16-0.
Isabelle Shoyer pitched all five innings for Coast Guard, giving up three hits while walking six and striking out one. Christine Carey went 3-4 with a double for the Bears with three RBIs and three runs. Emerson's
Claire Overton went 1-2 with a double and a walk.
Emerson had more luck scoring in game two. Coast Guard got out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and scored again in the fifth due to an outfield error. Emerson was being no-hit heading into their at-bats in the top of the sixth, but
Mackenzie Rice broke it up by leading off the inning with a single.
Sam Zannotti followed her up with another single, and then Overton gave the Lions the lead on one swing by belting a three-run homer. Coast Guard would get their lead back in the bottom half, as a double to center field by Lillia Farlow put them back ahead 4-3. Emerson went down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, sealing the win for Coast Guard.
Jessica Gomez had a solid outing for Emerson despite being handed the loss, as three of her four runs allowed were earned along with ten hits allowed and one strikeout. Dana Walker pitched the whole game for Coast Guard, giving up three runs off three hits along with four walks and six strikeouts. Breidenth went 1-3 with a double for the Bears, earning two RBIs and striking out once. Shroyer went 3-4 with an RBI.
