BOSTON, MA - Emerson hosted Smith College for a NEWMAC softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers took the first game after a big third inning propelled them to a 5-2 win; in the second game, the guests won 8-0 by mercy rule after five innings. The results improve Smith's record to 12-7-1 (4-2 NEWMAC), while Emerson falls to 11-13 (2-8 NEWMAC).
Game One: Smith 5, Emerson 2
Jessica Gomez took the circle for Smith in the first game, pitching all seven innings. Gomez gave up five runs (one earned) and twelve hits while striking out four. The loss puts her at 3-8 this season. Emilie Doty started for Smith, giving up two runs and eight hits through seven innings while sending down seven and walking one. Her record improves to 7-3.
Gomez opened the scoring in the second inning with a solo home run, her second of the season. Smith would take the lead after a five-run third inning. Two scored from a pair of sac flies, and a single to left drove in one more. A two-run home run by CeCe Alaniz made the score 5-1.
Emerson made the score 5-2 in the sixth inning, as
Sam Zannotti scored after
Makenzie Killough hit into a fielder's choice. Smith claimed the win after Doty shut out the Lions in the seventh inning.
Game Two: Smith 8, Emerson 0
Caleigh Sheehan started in the circle for Emerson in the second game, giving up five runs (two earned) and five hits through four innings. Sheehan also struck out three and walked four in the process. She was saddled with the loss, putting her record this season at 6-5.
Smith opted for Lucy Helms, who allowed no runs and five hits to go with three strikeouts and a walk. Helms was credited with the win, improving her record to 2-3.
Smith took an early 2-0 lead after Alaniz drove in two on a single in the first inning. The visitors scored again in the fourth after Sheehan walked in a run and Alaniz hit another two-run single.
Helms hit her first home run of the season to extend Smith's lead to 6-0. Taylor Ang later drove two more in with a single to left.
Emerson was unable to score in the bottom half, leading to the game being called due to mercy rule. Killough and
Grace Beaulieu recorded Emerson's two hits in the game.
Both teams face NEWMAC opponents in doubleheaders for their next match-ups. Emerson travels to Worcester to face Clark on April 19th, with the first game scheduled for 3 p.m.; Smith hosts Babson on April 14th, with the first game slated to start at 11 a.m.
