Men's Lacrosse Loses 19-13 to MIT in NEWMAC Matchup

BOSTON, MA - Emerson hosted MIT on Saturday evening in a NEWMAC men's lacrosse matchup. The two teams played a competitive game, but an eight-goal fourth quarter allowed the Engineers to pull away from their hosts and clinch the win. The Lions fall to 6-8 (1-4 NEWMAC) this season, while the Engineers improve to 4-8 (3-2 NEWMAC).

The Lions had a three-way tie for the team lead in scoring as Jack O'Rourke, Birk Swan, and Aedan Kiniry scored three goals each. O'Rourke and Swan also tallied three assists on the night, while Kiniry recorded one helper of his own. Quinn Gardner went 12-for-33 in face-offs. Malcolm McGrath spent the entire night in goal for the Lions and made fifteen saves despite the loss.

Zach Bleil led the Engineers with six goals scored; Heath Nilsen wasn't far behind his teammate, scoring five goals to go with eight assists. Andrew Palleiko went 20-for-32 in face-offs. David Vapnek played all sixty minutes in the net and made thirteen saves.

The Lions led 4-2 at the end of the first quarter, but the Engineers outscored their hosts 5-3 in the second quarter to send the game into halftime knotted at seven. Bleil scored the first goal of the contest with 14:28 remaining in the first quarter, while Swan and O'Rourke each scored twice in the first half.

The game was tied at eleven after both teams scored four times in the third quarter. The Engineers outscored the Lions 8-2 in the fourth quarter to break away for the win. Kiniry and Benson Offit scored the two goals for the Lions, while Nilsen scored three for the Engineers.

The Lions will head to New London to face the Coast Guard Academy in their next game, which is scheduled for 1 p.m. on April 20th. The Bears hold a 1-5 record in conference play this season. The Engineers' next game is against non-conference opponent Williams College on April 16th.
