THE LEAD: Emerson Men's Volleyball played a pair of matches today hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Rockwell Cage on Saturday. The Lions lost match one to Misericordia University of Pennsylvania, and fell in match two to host MIT; both in three sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions went down to Misericordia in three sets 25-17, 27-25, 26-24. Despite the loss, Emerson got solid performances out of senior Luke Roehm, who had 6 kills and 6 digs, and junior Bayden Slavik, who added 14 assists. Misericordia was led by juniors Kyle Ganoe with 13 kills, including 6 in the third set, and Gannon DeFrain with 37 assists.
Emerson fell into an early 5-0 deficit that they were unable to climb out of in the first set. The next two frames were a different story, with the Lions jumping out to an early lead of their own in the second set, and the third featuring 5 lead changes. The Cougars attack proved too much though, finishing with 45 kills and outperforming Emerson in hit percentage 58-30.

HOW IT HAPPENED
In match two Emerson fell to MIT in 3 sets 25-22, 25-11, 25-23. The Engineers were on the attack all day, finishing with 38 kills. The Lions struggled to develop an efficient attack of their own, boasting a hitting percentage of just .011. The Lions were once again paced by Luke Roehm who finished with 10 kills and 6 digs, and Bayden Slavik with 16 assists and 5 digs. MIT got an effective and efficient performance from sophomore Kevin Windisch, who finished with 11 kills on a hit percentage of .455.
In the first set the Lions battled back from a 7 point deficit to come within 2 at 23-21, before committing a pair of service errors that cost them the game. The second was more of a struggle for Emerson, managing just 4 kills to 10 errors, and quickly falling into an 11-4 hole that proved insurmountable.
The third set was once again more competitive, with the Lions doubling their kill count from the previous frame. Nevertheless, a late MIT run gave the Engineers match point at 24-19. The Lions once again battled back, rattling off 4 straight points, with 2 aces from Bayden Slavik. The late surge fell short though, with an attack from sophomore Chase Fagen on the left side falling just wide to give MIT the win.
