The Lead: The Emerson Women's Soccer team came up short on their quest to repeat as NEWMAC Champions.
Gina Lukoskie scored the game's first goal and gave the Lions a 1-0 lead, but Babson was able to even the score late in the second half and eventually score the game winning goal in the first overtime period, punching their ticket to the NEWMAC Championship and ending the Lions season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half:
-The first half saw a total of 12 shots between the two teams. Emerson firing 7 shots to Babson's 5 shots, with neither team able to find the back of the net. Lions' goalkeeper
Amara Schaub was able to turn away 5 Babson shots while Nora Ryan was able to save two attempts on goal by the Lions in the first 45 minutes.
-The first half concluded in a 0-0 tie between the two sides
Second Half:
58"- The Lions were able to break the scoreless tie in the 58
th minute when
Gina Lukoskie scored the game's first goal on a pass from
Simone Barragan-Shaw. The Lions had a 1-0 lead just over 10 minutes into the second half.
76"- Babson was able to even the score just under 20 minutes later when Cassie Lawson beat the Lions keeper on a pass from Janiya Ocampo and Morgan Krauss. The game was now tied at 1-1 with under 15 minutes remaining in regulation.
-Both defenses held firm in the final 15 minutes as neither side was able to secure the game-winning goal. Regulation ended in a 1-1 tie as the NEWMAC Semifinals was headed for overtime.
93" -Babson was able to break the 1-1 tie in the first overtime when Jordyn Ferrantino scored to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead.
-The second overtime period began with the Lions down 2-1 and needing to score at least one goal to force a shootout. The only opportunity by either team came off the foot of
Presley King in the 108
th minute but her shot sailed high, preserving the Beavers slim lead.
-The final two minutes ticked off the clock as Babson secured the NEWMAC Semifinals victory and punched their ticket to the NEWMAC Championship for the second straight season. The Lions came up short on their quest to repeat as NEWMAC Champions.
