HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE

  • The opening stanza saw four ties occur, the last coming at 11-all, before Emerson started to separate themselves with the next four points to grab the 15-11 lead on an ace by Steenbergen.
  • Emerson was able to fend off Johnson & Wales with a steady lead of four and used a bad set by the Wildcats and Steenbergen's swing to get the six-point 21-15 lead.
  • Back-to-back kills from Daniela Rank and Oliver cut Emerson's lead down to three at 22-19, which is the closest the visitors would come to reaching the Lions.
  • A kill by Combs followed a pair of attack errors by the Wildcats handed Emerson the opening set victory, 25-19.

SET TWO

  • Emerson, who held Johnson & Wales to a mere .057 hitting percentage, were able to keep the Wildcats with the score margin never ranging more than three through the opening portion of the second.
  • Starting on a forced attack error by the Wildcats, Emerson once again began to distance themselves and were able to stretch their lead up five thanks to Bond's kill and the score sat at 20-15.
  • A service error by the Lions earned the visitors one last point before the hosts rolled out the last four points and ended the 25-16 win on an attack miscue.

SET THREE

  • Much like the second set, the third started off tight between the two teams and saw two ties occur before Johnson & Wales grabbed their first advantage of the game at 14-11 on seven straight scores.
  • Emerson battled and erased Johnson & Wales' advantage with the next five of six points to reclaim the one-point edge, 16-15, on a bad set by Miller.
  • The Lions used two kills from Combs and Kay followed by Bond's ace at the service line to give themselves the three-point cushion at 19-16, a lead they would not surrender. Emerson would tack on the final six of nine points to grab the 25-20 win on junior Isabella Cubba's swing.

UP NEXT

  • Emerson ventures to Worcester on Saturday, September 17th for their first NEWMAC road slate at WPI with the first serve going up at 1:00 p.m.
