HOW IT HAPPENED

SET ONE

  • Emerson maintained a comfortable lead over Wheaton through a majority of the opening frame and led by as much as eight at 20-12. The visitors, however, battled back to erase the eight-point deficit and got themselves within one at 24-23.
  • One point from taking match point after a Lyons attack miscue, the Lions were plagued by errors and surrendered the final four points.
  • The Lyons used a Wingler kill followed by a pair of aces at the line to forge the 26-24 comeback win.

SET TWO

  • Emerson began the second set in front before a tie and a lead change had Wheaton with the lead and the Lions were playing from behind as the visitors were able to keep the hosts within two.
  • The Lions squared the set once more at 10-all on a swing from sophomore Brooke Maynex and followed with the next six of eight points to give themselves a four-point cushion at 16-12.
  • Wheaton would not go away quietly and were able to jump in front, 18-17, on a Lions attack error. From that point on, two more ties would occur, the last at 20-all.
  • With the score set at 20-all, a setting error by Wheaton helped Emerson set off a on a 6-0 spurt as Steenbergen sent down the set-winning kill to take the frame, 25-20.

SET THREE

  • After the Lions jumped out to the 6-2 lead to begin the third, they would not relinquish said lead through the entirely of the frame and were able to keep a good distance from Wheaton.
  • Wheaton was able to pull within four at 14-10 on a swing from Sydney Lyon and Lions attack miscue, but that would be the closest the Lyons would come.
  • Up four, Emerson embarked on a 9-2 spark that bolstered their lead into double-figures at 23-12.
  • Wheaton managed to cut into Emerson's double-digit lead and tack on four more points to put the score at 23-16.
  • The Lions took advantage of a pair of late Lyons' mishaps and snagged the third set, 25-17, and went up 2-1.

SET FOUR

  • Emerson carried momentum from the third frame into the fourth and wasted little time putting Wheaton in a quick 9-1 hole.
  • An Emerson attack error broke the scoring run, but the Lions regrouped and separated themselves well enough to send their lead into double-digits. at 14-4.
  • With the lead at 17-6, Wheaton was able to get four points back on four consecutive Emerson attack errors to move the score to 17-10.
  • Wheaton would get themselves within seven one more time at 20-13 before the Lions pieced together a deep 6-1 run to close out the fourth with the 25-14 win.
