HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening set of the match saw the first 20 points go by with no team building more than a one point lead. After a tie 10-10, Carolyn Vaimoso (Torrance, Calif.) took the serve for the Lions, and Emerson took the next five points to open up a 15-10 lead.  The Lions held this advantage throughout the set, eventually extending the lead to seven on a kill by Freshman Brooke Maynez (Las Cruces, N.M.) to take a 23-16 lead.  The Lions took two of the next three points to take the first set 25-17.

  • UMASS Boston fired back in the second set, taking a three point lead at 8-5 behind two kills from Marcelle Tiscareno (El Paso, Texas.).  Emerson made the deficit up and more when Caroline Bond took the serve, going on a 5-0 run behind two service aces from Bond. UMASS Boston tied the score at ten, before Emerson went on another 5-0 run to restore their lead.  The Lions extended their lead to six before the Beacons cut the lead to one at 24-23, but Emerson earned the final point of the set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.

  • Emerson jumped out to another lead in the third set, going on a 8-1 run behind the service of Lauren Quan (San Diego, Calif.) and Steenbergen. The Beacons were able to cut the lead two four, but the Lions restored their eight point advantage at 20-12, and the Lions closed out the set 25-17 on a kill from freshman Parker Cummings (Rochester, N.Y.).
