The Lead: The Emerson Women's Volleyball Team took down the Springfield Pride on Saturday afternoon in a Homecoming match, defeating the Pride for the first time ever. The Lions win clinched them a playoff spot for the first time.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first seyt saw multiple ties and lead changes, leading to a close set at the end. The Lions and Pride traded points throughout the set, bringing the score to 21 each late. Emerson jumped ahead 24-22 before Springfield was able to tie the score at 24. The Lions won the next two points, closing out the set on a block by Jillian Kay (Capistrano Beach, Calif.) and Carolyn Vaimoso (Torrance, Calif.).
The second set saw Emerson open up with a 7-4 lead behind a kill and service ace from Vaimoso. Springfield went on a 7-0 run following this, giving them a four poinnt lead of their own at 11-7. Emerson fought to bring the score within one multiple times, eventually tying the set at 23 all on a Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) kill. Springfield took the next two points and the set 25-23, knotting the score at 1-1.
The third set saw both teams split the first twelve points before Emerson opened up their lead to eight at 1-8, capping off a 5-0 run. The Lions held their lead and eventually took the set 25-16, winning four of the last five points, with Kay closing out the set with a kill.
In the fourth set, the teams went back and fouth, with neither team leading by more than four the whole set. Springfield extended their lead to four at 19-15. After trading points, Springfield led 20-16 before Emerson went on a 6-2 run to knot the score at 22. The Lions scored three straight points, capping off an 8-2 run to take the set victory at 25-22 on a Kay kill. The Liosn took the match 3-1.
UP NEXT
Emerson has clinched a playoff berth for the first time in the NEWMAC. The Lions will travel to take on the MIT Engineers on Tuesday with a time TBA.
