Lions Roar Back To Capture Sweep Of Saints

The Lead: The Emerson Lions roared back in the third set to win it on extra points with a final score of 27-25, capturing the sweep against the Saints of Emmanuel College.  

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Fara Cohen (MOrristown, N.J.) and Grace Tepper (Kensington, M.D.) combined for 33 of Emerson 51 kills to lead the Lions. Cohen tallied 17 whille Tepper had 16 of her own.
  • Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) had an impressive passing day with 44 assists on Emerson 51 kills.
  • Defensively, Lauren Quan (San Diego, Calif.) led all Lions with 18 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Emerson came out firing in the first set, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead behind the service of Jamie Groele (Chelmsford, Mass.)
  • Emerson didn't allow Emmanuel into the game, adding to their lead to make it 10 points at 13 to 3.
  • Emmanuel fought back,but was unable to get any closer than 10, and the Lions ended the first set with a dominant 25-10 score.
  • Jamie Groele's serve gave Emerson a 6-1 lead in the second set as well, but Emmanuel was able to fight back.
  • Emmanuel cut the lead to one at 12-11 after a run on Mary Shelow's (Miami, Fla.) serve.
  • The teams traded points, and the Lions found themselves up a point at 20-19.
  • After being subbed in with the score 23-20, Tepper killed two of the last three points to give Emerson a 25-21 victory.
  • In the final set, EMmanuel came out strong an opened up an 11-4 lead behind Mary Shelow's serve again.
  • The Lions clawed their way back into the game, eventually getting the lead down to two at 18-16 and forcing a timeout by Emmanuel.
  • Emerson had a 22-20 lead before Emmanuel tied it, and the teams traded points to a 25-25 tie.
  • Emerson was able to grab two striaght points, capping off the game on an Albany Alexander (Orlando, Fla.) kill, giving the Lions the sweep.

  • Emerson gets back into conference play on Saturday when they take on the Engineers of WPI at 1:00pm in Worcester, Mass.
