The Lead: The Emerson men's basketball suffered a 77-47 setback at the hands of the Wheaton (Mass.) Lyons in a NEWMAC rematch on Wednesday night in road conference action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Both junior Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) and freshman Jacob Ries (Mesa, Ariz.) anchored the Lions with eight points apiece.
- Along with eight points, Gray grabbed eight rebounds, three assists and shot 3-for-6 from the floor as Ries pulled down four rebounds and shot 3-for-5 from the paint.
- For Wheaton, Ryan Fogarty paced all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-12 and was credited with four assists, while Riley Tetreault chipped in 14 points and Duaka Ekwensi netted seven points with nine rebounds.
- Emerson finished the night shooting 40.9% on the hardwood (18-44) with a three-point percentage of 26.3% (5-19) and shot 60.0% from the free-throw line.
- Wheaton canned 28-of-63 (44.4%) from the field and went 8-of-30 from the perimeter (26.7%) while shooting 72.2% (13-18) on the charity stripe.
- Wheaton outdid Emerson on the glass (33-30), while the Lions were credited with 11 assists to the Lyons nine.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wheaton made their way onto the board first with a trey from Tetreault and was able to contain Emerson on both ends, holding the Lions scoreless over the next six and a half minutes.
- Through those six and a half minutes, Emerson allowed Wheaton to score 19 points to make the score 29-10.
- The hosts were able to put up an additional 18 points within the remainder of the half as the score held at 47-22 in the Lyons' favor.
- Emerson started off the second half strong, but never caught enough rhythm to catch Wheaton as the final stood at 77-47.
