The Lead: Despite double-figure point performances by sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) and sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.), the Emerson women's basketball team could not hold off the visiting Coast Guard Bears and shouldered the 63-50 NEWMAC loss on Wednesday night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Busch led the Lions with 14 points and finished 6-for-15 from the floor, recorded a pair of rebounds and assists along with three steals.
- Boyle followed up with 10 points and was 4-for-10 on the floor and had a team-best eight rebounds with one assist and one steal.
- Gill Gerton finished 6-for-20 from the field and paced the Bears offense with 16 points and three steals to match 11 rebounds and four assists.
- Brenna Wood had an overall game-high 12 boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- With 5:31 remaining in the first quarter, a jumper from Ducey squared the game at 6-all before Coast Guard pushed its lead to six on a 6-0 run (12-6).
- Boyle's layup at 1:21 marked Emerson's final shot of the quarter and put the Lions within four at 12-8.
- The closest the Lions would come to the Bears would be four at 14-10 before the Bears began to balloon its lead into double-digits at 14 after a 12-2 push put the score at 26-12.
- Emerson tacked on seven more points through the final 3:40 to cut the margin to 30-19, but a jumper by Gerton increased the Bears lead back to 13 (32-19) to close out the half.
- Coast Guard led by as much as 17 in the opening minutes of the third before Emerson slowly started to chip away and used a 11-5 streak to now trail by 11 with 4:04 left to play.
- Jill Bray tallied a pair from the charity stripe to the Bears 16 point lead (46-30) into the final ten minutes.
- Coast Guard maintained its double digit lead over Emerson and earned its biggest lead of 19 on a trey by Breanna Wood with 3:45 on the clock.
- The Lions closed the fourth out with seven consecutive points to bring them within 13, but 13 is the closest the Lions would come as the Bears walked away with the 63-50 win.
