Men's Basketball Suffers 100-76 Setback Against Babson To Open NEWMAC Action

The Lead: Junior Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) put up 15 points and sophomore Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) tallied 14 points with eight rebounds for the Emerson men's basketball team as the Lions suffered a 100-76 setback to Babson in its first NEWMAC contest of the season at Brown & Plofker Gym on Wednesday night. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Sheng led Emerson with 15 points and went 3-for-6 beyond the arc, while Gray chipped in 14 points with a team leading eight boards and three assists. 
  • Sophomore Mac Sashin (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) tallied eight points off the bench and junior Corey Fitz (Los Altos, Calif.) had two steals.
  • Isaiah Nelsen and Nick Comenale powered out 24 points each for Babson, while Bradley Jacks led the Beavers with nine boards. 
  • Joe Flannery and Matthew Droney each tallied five assists, while Sam Bohmiller had two takeaways. 

 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson displayed its power beyond the arc and banked three shots from downtown to take the 11-3 lead over Babson before the Beavers used a 6-0 streak to come within two after a trey by Nelsen. 
  • The Lions continued to maintain a steady lead over the Beavers and earned its biggest lead of nine after a three-pointer from freshman Kent Ellertson (Sudbury, Mass.) to put the score at 30-21 with 8:21 left in the first. 
  • Jacks drained a three to cap off a 9-4 run by the Beavers that gave them their first lead of the game at 38-37 with 3:23 on the clock
  • The Lions put up five more points through the final 2:22 of the half and entered the locker room down by five at 47-42. 
  • Babson went 7-0 to begin the second half to put the lead at 12 before Geary drained a three-point bucket to get Emerson back within single digits at nine (54-45). 
  • With 2:32 still left to play in the half, Babson extended its lengthy to 28 after two good free throws from Tyler Colon to put the score at 98-70. 
  • Through the final minute, sophomore Alex Miles (Venice, Calif.) and junior Ryan Wooley (Long Island, N.Y.) banked the final six points for Emerson before two shots from Shyheim Ulrickson on the charity stripe closed out the 100-76 loss for the Lions. 

UP NEXT 

  • Emerson continues NEWMAC action and head to Coast Guard on Saturday, January 7 for a 1:00 p.m. contest. 
  • Babson remains on the road and heads to NEWMAC foe, Springfield, on Saturday, January 7 as well for a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
