The Lead: The Emerson women's basketball team continued its winning ways as senior Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) tallied a team-leading 16 points to help guide the Lions to a 64-59 NEWMAC victory over Wheaton (Mass.) on Wednesday night to begin 2017.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Horan finished going 6-for-12 from the field with 16 points, while sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) followed with 14 points and seven rebounds. Junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) chipped in 10 points and went 3-for-7 from the field.
- Junior Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Penn.) had a team-high four steals and junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) had four blocks to match her team-high 11 rebounds and six assists.
- Oppie Morris led Wheaton with 18 points and four steals, while Sophia Black added 16 points with 11 rebounds, five assists and four takeaways.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wheaton held the first quarter lead through the first 5:23 before a bucket beyond the arc by Horan squared the game at 12-all.
- The Lyons closed out the quarter on a 7-2 run that was capped off with back-to-back treys from Lexi L'Heureux-Carland to grab the 19-14 edge.
- Horan paced Emerson in the second quarter with eight points as momentum began to swing in the Lions direction.
- Emerson outshot Wheaton 14-5 within the second and grabbed its first lead with 3:35 left on a three-pointer from Horan. The Lions entered the locker room with the tight 28-24 lead.
- Wheaton began to stage a comeback to start off the third after Morris drained a three to give the Lyons the 28-27 edge for a mere 18 seconds before a layup from Boyle put the Lions back on top.
- Both Emerson and Wheaton exchanged the lead until the later minutes of the third quarter.
- Black put up a jumper with 15 ticks left on the clock to give Wheaton the 41-40 lead, but it was Ducey's buzzer beating three that helped lift Emerson to the 43-41 advantage to enter the fourth.
- Boyle put eight points and five boards within the fourth to help keep Wheaton at bay and sealed Emerson's 64-59 win.
