The Lead: The Emerson women's basketball team could not hold off a 20-6 fourth quarter by Coast Guard as the Lions were edged out 64-57 by the Bears on Wednesday night in NEWMAC action.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) finished with a game-high 16 points and nine boards.
- Sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) tallied 15 points off the bench with eight rebounds and junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) chipped in 11 with seven rebounds and two steals.
- Micaela Martinelli notched with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds with three steals, as Gill Gerton had a team-best 15 points and Breanna Wood added nine rebounds and six steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears earned the early 7-0 first quarter lead with 8:01 still left to play in the first.
- Coast Guard controlled much of the opening stanza and closed out the first ten minutes with a 20-15 lead after Johanna Moolenaar sank a jumper.
- The hosts stretched their lead to nine with seven minutes left in the second at 29-17 on a trey by Gerton.
- Emerson slowly began to chip away at Coast Guard's lead and gained its first lead of the game on a good shot beyond the arc by Savino to put the score at 34-33.
- The Lions extended its lead to six to conclude the third with the 51-44 edge.
- Coast Guard held Emerson to just six points within the fourth and regained the lead after a 12-0 run to lead them to the 64-57 victory.
