The Lead: Freshman Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) and sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) each canned a team-best 10 points for the Emerson women's basketball team in the Lions 56-43 setback against the WPI Engineers in NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Madden finished going 4-for-11 on the floor with 10 points off the bench, along with four rebounds, one assist and one steal.
- Boyle led the starters with 10 points, going 4-for-7 from the field with a team-best eight boards. Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) also had eight rebounds as well as four assists. Junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) led the defense with three steals.
- Tess Nogueira notched a game-best 11 points for the visiting Engineers and went 3-for-9 from the floor with nine rebounds and one assist.
- Ama Biney and Priscilla Dunphy followed with 10 points apiece with Biney tallying a team-best 10 boards, four assists and seven steals.
- Emerson finished shooting 34% from the field and went 8-for-11 from the charity line (8-for-11).
- WPI shot 37.1% from the floor and were 9-for-13 from the free throw line (69.2.%).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- WPI gained their biggest lead of seven at the 4:10 mark on jumper by Dunphy to give the Engineers the early 11-4 edge.
- Emerson managed to pull within three on a shot from downtown by freshman Natalie Clydesdale (Pittsburgh, Penn) to put the score at 13-10.
- Emerson closed the quarter behind by four after Madden dished out a layup (16-12).
- The Engineers upped their lead to eight on two occasions before the Lions managed to closed the gap to four after a pair of good free throws by Savino to put the score at 24-20.
- After Emerson cut the lead down to four, WPI outscored the Lions 7-0 through the final 5:05 of the half and entered the locker room with the 31-20 advantage.
- The Lions found themselves down 14 in the opening minutes of the third quarter, but caught fire in the midst of the quarter with a 8-2 streak.
- On a trey by Boyle with 24 ticks left, Emerson made their way into the final quarter down by three at 37-34.
- At 9:15 of the final stanza, Boyle canned a layup and drew the foul to square the game 37-all.
- With the score evened at 27-all, WPI broke the tie and tallied 14 points to increase its lead to 13 at 51-38 before Emerson answered with five points to creep within eight at 51-43.
- The Engineers pushed its lead to 13 with 26 seconds left to play and handed the Lions the 56-43 loss.
