The Lead: Sophomore Geoffrey Gray (Newton, Mass.) and juniors Michael Sheng (Altadena, Calif.) and John Geary (Duxbury, Mass.) each put up double-digit point performances for the Emerson men's basketball team in the Lions 66-56 loss to Clark in NEWMAC action on Wednesday night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Gray went 4-for-14 on the floor with a team-leading 14 points, game high nine rebounds and two assists and three steals.
- Geary followed up with 12 points and went 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, two rebounds and one assist.
- Sheng finished 4-for-9 from the field with 11 points, four assists and three steals.
- Lamar Berk led Clark with 16 points, while Joe Atkinson had seven rebounds and John Pisacreta had a team-high four assists. Adam Converse led the defense with two steals.
- Emerson shot 25-for-58 (43.1%) from the floor and 4-for-20 in three-point attempts.
- Clark went 19-for-51 from the field and made nine of 19 shots (47.4%) behind the three-point line
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson took an 8-0 lead over Clark after sophomore Mac Sashin (Martha's Vineyard, Mass.) put up a pair of layups at the 16:27 mark of the first half.
- At 9:49, Sheng drained a three to give the Lions their largest lead of 11 at 22-11.
- Through the next 6:32, Clark embarked on a 14-3 run to cut down Emerson's once dominant 11-point lead and square the score 25-all on a trey by Adam Converse with 3:00 left to play in the opening half.
- After a three-point bucket from Geary put Emerson back on top 28-27 at 1:52, Clark answered with a 7-0 run through the final 1:39 to give the Cougars the 34-28 lead at the half.
- Clark continued to stretch its lead and put 15 points on the board through the first 12:48 of the second half to make the score 49-34.
- The Cougars held a 14 point lead over the Lions going into the final 7:53 of the half, but the Lions battled and saw Geary can a pair of three's to get Emerson within six at 59-53.
- Clark upped its lead to 10 with 42 seconds left in regulation after two good shots from the charity stripe by Joe Atkinson.
- Grey from downtown put Emerson within seven at 63-56 to spark some life back into the Emerson offense. Clark put three more points on the board through the final 27 seconds to hand Emerson the 66-56 loss.
