The Lead: Sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) canned a team-leading 11 points and six rebounds for the Lions as the Emerson women's basketball team fell 71-45 against WPI in its second NEWMAC matchup of 2017 at Harrington Auditorium on Tuesday night.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Boyle finished 3-for-6 from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line with 11 points, six rebounds, one assists and one block.
- Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) had a team-leading five assists to match nine points.
- Priscilla Dunphy paced WPI with a game-high 16 points, while Ama Biney, Maura Buckley and Sarah Rogers each had seven boards. Stasha Greenalch tallied three assists for the Engineers.
- The Lions went 16-for-44 (36.4%) on the floor and were 4-for-18 (22.2%) beyond the arc.
- WPI shot 26-for-55 (47.3%) from the field and canned 4-of-8 shots from behind the three-point line.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Emerson gained the early 4-2 lead with 2:53 of the first quarter in the books, but WPI built a 10-point advantage at 14-4 with 1:01 left to play in the first quarter before Boyle's jumper with 43 ticks on the clock cut the deficit to eight at 14-6.
- At 5:17 of the second, Brittney Lambert drained a three to increase the WPI lead to 13 and started a 9-2 run by the Engineers to put the lead at 21-8.
- Kicked off by a trey from junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.), the Lions embarked on a 10-0 streak through the final 1:45 to get themselves within nine at 29-20 at the half.
- Emerson outscored WPI 18-13 in the third and began to piece a comeback together as freshman Natalie Clydesdale's (Pittsburgh, Penn.) three-point bucket put the Lions within a pair with 30 seconds remaining in the third.
- The Engineers began to stretch their lead with 6:17 left on the clock in the fourth at 54-39 and tallied the final 15 of 17 points to hand the Lions the 71-45 setback.
