Women's Basketball Powers Out First NEWMAC Win Over Clark, 82-63

The Lead: Sophomore Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) powered out a double-double performance with 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Emerson women's basketball team to victory in an 82-63 rout over Clark in its first NEWMAC win of the 2016-2017 season on Saturday afternoon. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS 

  • Boyle paced the Lions with 20 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and two blocks as three more Lions put up double digits in points. Senior Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.) put up 11 points as sophomore Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) added 11 points and junior Eastin Ashby (Pittston, Penn.) chipped in 13. Junior Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) had a game-high nine assists and Ashby had five steals. 
  • Aretha Sullivan led Clark with 13 points, six assists and went 7-10 at the charity line. Sam O'Gara followed with 10 points while Ogechi Ezemma had a game-high five takeaways. O'Gara and Sullivan each had three steals apiece. 
  • Emerson shot 9-10 at the free throw line (90%) while Clark went 15-28 (53.6%). The Lions also outshot the Cougars behind the arc (48.4-34.9). 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Emerson and Clark kept the score within one before a three-point bucket from Busch capped off a 5-0 streak by the Lions to put them ahead 15-12. 
  • Busch drained her second three pointer with 23 ticks left in the first quarter to put Emerson up 20-15 before O'Gara tallied a pair from the charity line to cut the lead to 20-17 to wrap up the quarter.
  • The Lions pieced together a 10-0 run with 3:57 remaining in the second and gained the 32-22 lead after a jumper in the lane from Ducey. 
  • A pair of free throws from freshman Quinn Madden (Mokena, Ill.) closed out the first half as Emerson entered the locker room with a 39-24 lead. 
  • The Emerson offense continued to cruise as the Lions gained its biggest lead of 22 at 52-28  after junior Maya Savino (Killingworth, Conn.) drained a three from downtown with a little over five minutes left in the third.
  • Clark remained within 20 at the end of the third quarter as Emerson maintained a steady 61-31 lead over the Cougars. 
  • The Cougars managed to cut the lead down to 16 after Sullivan put up a pair of free throws, but the Lions extended their lead back to 21 after freshman Kate Foultz (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) dished out a three (68-47). 
  • Maya Kersetter sent up a final shot for Clark as the clock wound down, but the ball hit the rim as Emerson locked up the 82-63 win. 

UP NEXT 

  • Emerson returns to the court on on Tuesday, December 6, as it travels to Connecticut College and is slated for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. 
  • Clark continues road action on Wednesday, December 7 as they travel to Coast Guard at 7:00 p.m.
