Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. - In NEWMAC action on Thursday night at Staake Gymnasium, the Emerson women's volleyball team fell in a 3-0 sweep to the Babson College Beavers. The Beavers took the first set by a score of 25-15, 25-20 in the second frame and closed out the match with a 25-15 win.

Emerson slips down to 13-7 overall and 2-5 in NEWMAC play, while Babson improves to 10-7 overall and 6-2 against NEWMAC opponents.

Senior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, N.Y.) had a team-high 10 kills for Emerson and had two blocks. Sophomore Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) registered nine digs, while sophomore Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) recorded 23 assists and freshman Kayleen Bertrand (New Boston, N.H.) had an ace.

Sophomore Abby Beecher (Pittsford, N.Y.) tallied a team-high 14 digs for Babson with two aces as Roseen recorded 10 kills, an ace and a block. Atchison and senior Lorraine Mackiewicz (Edison, N.J.) led the defense with three blocks apiece. Mackiewicz also tallied 10 kills and two aces. Freshman Elizabeth Cameron (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) had 12 digs, three aces and 32 helpers.

A Babson ace capped off the first eight points tallied by the Beavers to help lift them to an early 8-1 lead over Emerson in the opening frame. The Beavers then pulled ahead by nine at 15-6 on an attack error committed by the Lions, but the Lions battled their way back. Emerson pieced together a 5-1 run to come within five of Babson thanks to two kills from senior Annie Hall (Okemo, Mich.) and one from freshman Bella Edwards (Palisades, Calif.) to put the score at 16-11. The Lions recorded four more points before the Beavers put away the first set on three finals kills from senior Jenny Karnes (Houston, Texas) to take the 25-15 first set win.

Emerson grabbed the 7-5 lead to begin the second set off two Babson attack errors and it was the last time the Lions would obtain the lead. Babson pulled ahead by four at 11-7 on a 6-0 streak that consisted of five consecutive kills from five different Beavers players. The Lions fought their way back and came within two at 19-17 that included two kills from Cohen and battled again to come within three at 23-20. The offensive spark from Emerson came a little too late for a kill from Atchison and an ace locked up the 25-20 victory.

Like the second set, Emerson gained the early 7-6 lead over Babson before they watched the lead disappear once again. Two kills from Roseen allowed Babson to grab the 11-7 lead, but Emerson was never too far behind. The Lions kept the set close and did not fall behind more than three points until the Beavers tallied six straight points to gain an eight point lead at 19-11. Emerson tacked on four more points off a pair of Babson attack errors and kills from senior Amanda Linzmeyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and freshman Lily Marella (Portland, Ore.) to get the score to 23-15. 15 is all the Lions would score as Roseen closed the 25-15 third set triumph and 3-0 sweep with a kill.

Emerson heads to Lasell for a non-conference matchup at 6:00 p.m. next Thursday night, while Babson will travel to Waterville, Me. for a tri-match against Wesleyan and Colby at 12:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
