BOSTON, Mass - It was a tough loss for Emerson Women's Basketball as they hosted visiting MIT for their first NEWMAC home game. The Lions maintained a lead for most of the game, but in the final moments the MIT Engineers was able to pull ahead with a final score of 61-58. With the win MIT rises to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. The Lions fall to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
Emerson opened the game with a layup by Maya Savino. MIT answered moments later with a 3 pointer off the fingers of Kara Holinski, 3-2. Both teams traded points but Emerson retook the lead with a 3 pointer by Eastin Ashby, followed by another layup by Savino. The first quarter ended with the Lions leading 20-13.
In the second quarter Taylor V'Dovec and Maya Ramachandran made two quick shots for MIT to close the gap 20-17. Several minutes passed before Emerson Senior Janissa Delzo cut through the defense and scored a layup. MIT continued to stay within spitting distance as the first half ended 32-26 Emerson.
The second half saw a refocused MIT offense as they closed the gap within 3 points by the end of the 3rd quarter, 44-41. MIT's offensive energy continued into the final quarter as they tied it up with less than 8 minutes left in the game thanks to two made free throws by Kristen Ngan. Liana Ilutzi hit a jumper with 7 minutes left to give MIT the lead, 49-47. A minute later freshman Charlie Boyle was able to tie it up for the Lions with a layup, followed quickly by a 3 pointer from Savino to swing the lead back to Emerson, 54-51.
With less than 30 seconds Sabrina Drammis made two free throws to give MIT the lead, 59-58. A second Emerson foul sent Holinski to the line for the Engineers which put the final score at 61-58.
Stat leaders for MIT include Holinski with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Next was Sabrina Drammis with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Leading for the Lions was Sierra Ducey with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Close behind was Savino with 12 points and 2 steals.
Next up for the Engineers is a road game against Mt. Holyoke College on Jan 9th at 1:00pm. The Lions return to action on the 9th as well when they host Springfield College at 3:00pm.
