Men's Basketball Defeats Springfield in Epic Second Half Comeback!

BOSTON, Mass - The Lions Sean Duffy recorded a double double as The Emerson Men's Basketball team defeated the visiting Springfield College Pride, 73-59, on Wednesday after a big second-half comeback.


Emerson started off the game slow and allowed Springfield to score 15 unanswered points to open the game. Brandon Eckles scored the first 4 points for the Pride, followed by a 3 pointer from Larry Piretra. Eckles scored 12 points in the first half to help give Springfield the early lead. The first half saw Springfield shoot 47% from the field while Emerson only shot 25%. Springfield headed into halftime with a 38-23 lead.

The second half saw Emerson tighten up on defense while catching fire from the field. Emerson executed their offensive sets while holding Springfield to only 21 points during the second half. Emerson was led by Duffy who had 22 second-half points, 24 total, and gave Emerson a big post presence while eventually taking the lead. Emerson was also aided by timely baskets from Tyson Hallowell and Jay Kleinbart who helped push Emerson out of reach from Springfield. Kleinbart returned to the court after a recent injury and put up 5 points and an assist.


Stat leaders for the Pride include Eckles with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Josh Downes and Josh Altman both followed with 11 points each and a combined 5 rebounds. Piretra lead the pride in rebounds with 7.


Leading for the Lions was Duffy with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Hallowell was right behind him with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Austin Pinckney tied Duffy in rebounds, also with 10, and scored 8 points. Honorable mentions go to Michael Sheng and Geoffrey Gray who help the Lions control the ball during key possessions.

With the win, Emerson moves to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in NEWMAC. With the loss, Springfield is now 7-11 overall and 3-4 in NEWMAC.


The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 30th, when they host the Babson Beavers. Tip off set for 1:00pm. The Pride look forward to Saturday as well when they travel to WPI for a 7:00pm game.
