WPI Defeats Men's Basketball After Intense Matchup

BOSTON, Mass - In an intense matchup between Emerson Men's Basketball and the WPI Engineers, Obi Obiora and Clyde Niba lead the Engineers to victory with 11 points each. With the win WPI rises to 13-2 overall, and 3-1 in conference play. The Lions are now 5-10 overall, and 0-4 in the NEWMAC.


Sean Doncaster opened the game for WPI with a jump shot to give the Engineers an early lead. He would go on to have 10 points, 4 rebounds, and a blocked shot before the final buzzer. The Lions quickly responded with two quick baskets from Austin Pinckney to bring the score up 6-4, WPI.


The Engineers extended their lead by as much as 12, before Freshman Geoffrey Gray hit a 3 pointer, followed by a jump shot to close the gap with the score at 23-16. Both teams traded points, and with only 3 seconds left before the half, Doncaster hit a 3-pointer. Both teams entered the locker room with the score at 38-29.


In the second half WPI went on a 6 point run before Pinckney made a layup for the Lions, followed by a layup by Gray, who was fouled and then made his free throw, 44-34. On WPI's next possession, John Geary made a defensive rebound and brought it back down the court for another 2 points.


Both teams continued to play aggressive ball going into the final moments of the game. Tyson Hallowell hit a 3 pointer for the Lions with only 17 seconds left, closing the WPI lead down to 67-62. Chris Rodgers of WPI was then fouled twice and made 3 of his 4 free throws, bringing the final score up 70-62.


Leading in rebounds for WPI was Obiora with 10 total. Stat leaders for the Lions include Pinckney with 19 points and 6 rebounds. Close behind was Michael Thorpe with 5 points, 8 rebounds, and a blocked shot.


The Engineers return to action on Jan 20th, when they host Clark University at 7:00pm. Next up for the Lions is a home game against Wheaton, also scheduled for the 20th with a 5:30pm tip off.
