Women's Volleyball Falls to WPI after Early Lead, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass – The Emerson College women's volleyball team fell to WPI, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action, Tuesday evening. First year outside hitter Casey Hunt (Granby, Conn.) led the way notching 13 kills on eight attempts.

 

Emerson jumped out to the quick 1-0 lead, edging out WPI, 25-22 in the first set. Junior outside hitter Elizabeth Reid (Charlottesville, Vir.) was perfect from the floor notching three kills on three attempts while sophomore outside hitter Brittany Schoellkopf (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) led the way with four kills on seven attempts for a staggering .429 attack percentage.

 

However, momentum swung in favor of the Engineers with back-to-back victories in the second and third sets to take the 2-1 match lead. Hunt posted four kills on nine attempts to lead WPI to the 25-13 win in game two to tie up the contest at one game each. Sophomore outside hitter Melissa Daigle (Norfolk, Mass.) registered a set-high four kills on nine attempts and just one miscue for a .333 attack percentage.

 

The Lions made a valiant comeback attempt in the fourth set to even up the score lead by as three late in set behind Schoellkopf's set-high five kills. But the Engineers were resilient and battled back to outlast the Lions, 28-26. Hunt was solid offensively at the net leading WPI with three kills to claim their eighth victory of the season.

Stat leaders for the Lions include Schoellkopf with 15 kills and 3 service aces. Sam Harton had 14 digs and an ace, followed closely by Jessica Hamilton with 10 digs and 2 aces. Elaine Nichols had 25 set assists while teammate Moira Brennan had 13 assists.


Emerson falls to 6-5 on the season and 1-2 in NEWMAC action while WPI improves to 8-2 and 2-1 in conference play.

In other news, a recent New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll has the Lions tied for 14th in the region. WPI also received votes.

 

The Lions return to the hard-court on Saturday September 26th when they host Springfield College at 1:00 p.m. The Engineers will be back in action on Thursday September 24th when they host the Coast Guard Academy at 7:00 p.m. in Worcester, Mass.
