Wheaton Rallies to Win in 5th Set Against Women's Volleyball

BOSTON, Mass - In an epic matchup, the Lyons of Wheaton traveled to Boston to face the Lions of Emerson in a match that went to 5 sets. The points swung back and forth, but in the end, Wheaton was able to snag the win. With the lose, Emerson Women's Volleyball falls to 9-7 overall, and 2-4 in conference play. The Lyons of Wheaton are now 8-11 overall, and 2-4 in the NEWMAC.

 

The first set was a furious battle as the lead changed several times. Emerson scored the first point of the match off a Lyons error, but the score was quickly tied by a kill from Claire Cansler. Emerson retook the lead off a kill by Kelley Guerra. Wheaton closed out the first set with a kill by Arieanne Crieghton, ending the set 25-23.

 

The second set saw the Emerson Lions fire back with a score of 25-10, thanks to multiple kills by Annie Hall, Fara Cohen, and Jules Augustine. The Lions finished the set with 5 unanswered points.

 

The third and fourth sets were opposites of the first two, as Emerson won the third set 25-23. Followed by Wheaton taking the fourth set 25-13.

 

Both teams went into the fifth set with a fire in their eyes. After Emerson scored the first point off an unusual kill by Cohen, the Wheaton coach received a red card after vocalizing his disagreement rising the score 2-0 Emerson. Deirdre Wilson scored the first point for Wheaton, followed by an Emerson run to bring the score 6-1. Wheaton then went on a run of their own, rising the score 10-6 before Augustine was able to score a kill off an assist from Brittany Schoellkopf.

 

With the score tied at 13-13, a service error put Wheaton in the lead, allowing them to close out the match 15-13 with their final kill from Crieghton.

 

Stat leaders for Emerson include Augustine with 12 kills, Elaine Nichols with 31 assists, and Sam Harton with 33 digs. Leading for Wheaton was Kendall Jacobs with 18 kills, Deirdre Wilson with 38 assists, and Stephanie Martin with 29 digs.

 

Next up, Emerson's faces Trinity College on the home court on Saturday, October 10th at 12:00pm. Wheaton will be hosting Coast Guard Academy on October 13th at 7:00pm.
