Women's Volleyball Sweeps Simmons, 3-0

BOSTON, Mass - Junior Jules Augustine (Skaneateles, NY) and freshman Fara Cohen (Morristown, NJ) each have 10 kills in Emerson College Women's Volleyball's 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-20) victory over visiting Simmons College at the Brown-Plofker Gym Thurs. Oct. 15. The victory improves the Lions record to 10-9 and 2-5 in the NEWMAC, while the Sharks drop to 8-11 and 5-2 in the GNAC.

After the first set began 3-3, Emerson went on a 7-2 run to take a 10-5 lead. But Simmons would battle back to get tie the set at 12-12, and stick with the Lions until a Jessica Hamilton (Los Angeles, CA) kill gave Emerson an 18-16 advantage. Emerson would take seven of the next 10 points and win the first frame 25-19.

Set number two began back and forth with each team trading points. With the set tied at five a side, the Lions took the next five points to take a 9-5 lead. Simmons would then return the favor by going on a 4-2 run, making the score 10-9. The Lions then bounced back and to go on a 9-7 spurt to elevate their advantage to 19-16, forcing a Simmons timeout. After the timeout, the Lions finished the set, 25-17 on a 6-1 run capped by a Hamilton kill.

The final set looked like it would be a runaway for the Lions when they took a 6-2 lead, forcing a Sharks timeout. But the stoppage swung the momentum to Simmons and they battled back to tie the set at 10. After the Sharks took an 11-10 lead, Emerson bounced back to take an 18-14 lead on a freshman Kelley Guerra (Randolph, NJ) kill. The teams then traded points until the Lions finished the set 25-20 on an error by the Sharks.

To go along Augustine and Cohen's 10 kills, sophomore Brittany Schoellkopf (Pacific Palisades, CA) had seven kills, and three digs. Guerra added five kills and a dig. Freshman setter Moira Brennan (Glenview, IL) assisted on 23 of Emerson's 31 kills. Hamilton had 12 digs and libero Sam Harton (Cartersville, GA) chipped in 10. The Lions hit .302 as a team.  

Simmons was led by junior Cailin Fredrickson's (Columbia, MD) 16 kills and five digs. Sophomore Sarah Woodward (Deerfield, MA) added nine kills and five digs, with two aces. And setter Jessica Phinney (Malden, MA) assisted on 25 of the Sharks' 33 kills.

Emerson next travels to Coast Guard Tue. Oct. 20 in a NEWMAC match, while Simmons hosts Mt. Ida Sat. Oct. 17 in a GNAC contest.
