Men's Basketball Scores 62-60 Victory Over Wheaton In Nail Biter

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – Eli Kell-Abrams scored 21 points and went 5-for-7 from 3-pont range to lead the Emerson Lions to a 62-60 victory against the Wheaton College Lyons Wednesday night.  The Lions improve to 11-6, and 4-2 in NEWMAC play.  Wheaton falls to 10-7, and 3-3 in conference games.

The first half was all Emerson as they eased their way to a 39-31 advantage at the half.  Kell-Abrams scored 17 points, 15 of which came from beyond the arc.  Wheaton struggled offensively throughout the half, shooting only 9-30 from the field. EC shot a solid 48.5% in the first half and 60% from 3-point range.

The second half provided more theatrics as Wheaton fired back early.  Foul trouble plagued key members of EC, as both Michael Thorpe and Brian Hurley had to leave the game early in the half with four fouls apiece.

Wheaton tied the score 54-54 with 5:13 left to play after Will Bayliss on Wheaton drove for a layup and was fouled by Thorpe, creating a 3-point play.

After Kell-Abrams made four crucial free throws, the game remained a back-and-forth affair.  With 37 seconds left, Bayliss tied the game for Wheaton bringing the score even at 60.

Thorpe re-entered the game for the closing possessions, and came up big for EC.  He scored with 5.2 seconds left, and Wheaton failed to answer as the Lions rolled off with another NEWMAC win on their inaugural season.

Next tip-off is at MIT on Saturday, January 25 at 3 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
