Women's Volleyball Sees Winning Streak Come To An End Against JWU

Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – While Kat Rice and Alyssa Thorne combined for 33 kills on the night, the effort wasn't enough as the Emerson Women's Volleyball Team fell 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 28-26 to the JWU Wildcats Wednesday night. The loss breaks Emerson's regular season streak of 22 straight GNAC wins, dating back to last season. The Lions are now 15-9 overall and 9-1 in the conference as JWU improves to 12-17 on the year and 7-3 in the GNAC.

Set one seemed like business as usual for the Lions as they came out to swing .290 as a team with Alyssa Thorne tearing it up for five kills and a.714 average. The EC defense stepped up to thwart the Wildcat offense as well with Jamie Morgan and Juliana Tucker hauling in four digs each in the set en route to a 25-16 win.

JWU seemed to have other plans in the second set though as they clawed back into the match with two blocks on the Lions even as Kat Rice cranked out six kills to lead EC. It proved to be a gritty set that saw five tie scores and a lead change before JWU edged out a 25-19 win.

Set three saw JWU come out swinging as they stifled the EC offense who's only glimmer of life came from Kat Rice with five kills. The Wildcats put up three blocks in the set though while Megan Bollerman floored four to give JWU the advantage. Jamie Morgan did work on defense with seven digs in the set, but in the end JWU took the 25-19 win and 2-1 lead.

The fourth and final set saw a full-on battle royale that featured 12 tie scores, four lead changes and extra points to finish it. The Lions shook off the prior two sets to come back hard at JWU with five kills from Alyssa Thorn and Kat Rice and Giuli Frendak both posting four apiece. In the end though the Wildcats swung just a little bit better than the Lions while adding two blocks which made the difference in the 28-26 final.

The Lions will close out their regular season schedule this Saturday as they set to host Norwich and St. Joe's of Maine in a tri-match. The first match is set to start at 11 a.m. in Boston at Emerson's Brown-Plofker Gym.
