Volleyball Rallies Up For Dig Pink For Two More Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BOSTON, Mass. – With Kelsey Scanlon lighting up the board for 22 kills and 38 digs on the day coupled with Kat Rice's seven blocks the Emerson Women's Volleyball Team saw their banner 2011 season continue Saturday as they topped UMass-Dartmouth 3-0 and Colby-Sawyer 3-1 in their Dig Pink event to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer research. The team is now 18-5 overall headed into the final weeks of regular season play.

The first match of the day pitted the Lions against the UMD Corsairs in the morning match-up with the first set seeing two difference Lions with four and five kills apiece with Kat Rice and Megan Kaplon throwing it down for EC's .286 average to roll to a 25-17 win. While the Corsairs stepped up a bit in the second game, EC's defense with 19 digs, five by  Jessica Drumright and Kelsey Scanlon, along with two blocks made the difference as EC went up 2-0 with a 25-21 win.

Three was all there need be against UMass-Dartmouth as EC held UMD to a .000 attack percentage while all cylinders clicked as Kat Rice and Kelsey Scanlon floored four kills each while the D picked up two more blocks en route to a 25-15 final.

In the second match of the day, the Lions took on a familiar foe in Colby-Sawyer who they topped 3-0 earlier in the season. It wasn't to be as easy a win the second time tangoing with the Chargers as they had to battle off the surge of CSC who out-swung the Lions .184-.171 while posting four to EC's three blocks. But errors crept up on Colby with 13 unforced errors telling the tale as Emerson took a 25-23 win.

The Lions couldn't withstand the block of the Chargers though in the second set as CSC was impenetrable with five blocks to battle off nine tie scores to win 26-24 and push it an even 1-1. Set three the Lions forced the Chargers off-kilt again as Colby swung better but couldn't seem to  contain their mistakes which gave the Lions the space to take it to CSC to take a 25-20 lead.

The final set saw the Lions click back into their normal high gear with Kelsey Scanlon stepping up to take the reigns with four kills and nine digs as Alexa Krakowiak put up a solo block and assisted on the next with the Lions clawing to a 25-22 win en route to their 18th win of the season.

The Lions will hit the floor again this week in a non-conference action where they'll travel to Keene State Thursday night for a 7 p.m. match.
