Stanford Nance

Since 2003, Stanford Nance has filled many roles for Emerson College’s Athletics Department.

From February 2023 -through May 2023, Stan served as the Interim Associate Dean for Campus Life/Director of Athletics and now returns to his original position Sr. Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs.

As the Senior Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs, which he was promoted to in 2014 after serving two years as the Interim Athletic Director. Stan was initially hired as an assistant athletic director.

Stan has been the recruiting coordinator for the Athletics Department since he began working at Emerson. In that role, he coordinates all official and unofficial on-campus visits for prospective students and helps coaches set up faculty interviews, class visits, and financial aid interviews.

Stan has been the Athletics Department liaison for Undergraduate Admission, Facilities, Information Technology, Financial Aid, Public Safety, and Institutional Advancement. His liaison duties include being involved in compliance monitoring, working with the Writing and Academic Resource Center to identify and monitor academically at-risk student-athletes, and has been a student employment coordinator.

One of his main responsibilities is managing the department’s public-facing events. The annual Emerson College Athletics Golf Outing fundraiser raises funds to enhance the overall student-athlete experience, including the Senior Athletics Banquet, additional equipment, travel gear, and transportation/meal funding for the postseason.

During Athletics’ Alumni Student-Athlete Homecoming each fall, Stan manages a reception for the Heart of a Lion Award, which is given to an Emersonian who has impacted the student-athlete experience.

In his role as the community service coordinator, he’s extended the department’s outreach throughout Greater Boston, which includes coordinating transportation for Emerson’s 14 varsity teams. Stan is also responsible for paying the department’s sports game officials. Throughout the academic year, Emerson hires approximately 500 home game officials and varsity sports coordinators. He works with Boston’s Parks and Recreation Department to secure permits for varsity sports games at Rotch Field. When plans were being finalized for the renovation of Rotch Field, his input was invaluable in the design and construction of the facility.

He also oversees the operation of the Fitness Center, which has 2,100+ members and employs 4 full-time staff. In this capacity, he meets with the Fitness Center general manager to discuss needs like updating equipment and identifying programs such as aerobics, stationary bicycling, and other classes for each semester.

Stan and his eight siblings grew up in Washington, DC. After high school, he headed to New Jersey to attend Rutgers University on a full men’s basketball scholarship. He was a co-captain for the Scarlet Knights and won the Paul Robeson Scholar-Athlete Award and the Rutgers Basketball Scholar-Athlete Award. Stan was also a member of the Rutgers Men's Basketball Final Four team. He graduated with a degree in economics/business.

Prior to his arrival at Emerson, he was a Division I men’s basketball coach at Rutgers University, Northeastern University, University of Hartford, University of Miami, Virginia Commonwealth University, Old Dominion University, and Boston College.

Stan currently lives in Stoughton, MA, with his wife and college sweetheart, Alethea. Their son, Darnell, is an alum of Dartmouth College where he played varsity soccer for 4 years. Not surprisingly, Stan and Alethea are big sports fans, so they enjoy attending all of the local sports games: the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox, and Revolution.
